The Language of Flowers: Floriography and the Timeless Tradition of Meaningful Blooms

Flowers have a lot to say—without ever saying a word. Like a secret love note, tucked into a bouquet, blooms can say “I’m sorry” or “I adore you.” The story of which flowers hold which sentiments and stories is called floriography (a.k.a. the language of flowers). Encyclopedia-like definitions of the feeling that buds can carry is part of our shared history and has been whispering sweet sentiments for centuries—and it’s just as charming and meaningful today.

Historical Roots of Floriography

Red Roses: Of course, red roses are a classic symbol of deep love and passion. Red roses have been the go-to floral love letter for centuries. A single rose says “I love you,” while a dozen practically sings it.

The concept of assigning meanings to flowers dates back to ancient civilizations. In the Ottoman Empire, a practice called selam involved using flowers and objects to convey messages, a tradition that captivated European visitors. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, an English aristocrat, introduced this idea to England in the early 18th century after observing it during her time in Turkey.

Floriography gained significant popularity during the Victorian era, a time when societal norms often restricted open emotional expression. People turned to flowers to communicate sentiments that couldn't be spoken aloud. The publication of floral dictionaries, such as Le Langage des Fleurs by Charlotte de La Tour in 1819, provided guidance on the symbolic meanings of various flowers so you could be sure the message was right and the receiver knew what you were saying too!

Contemporary Applications of Floriography

While the strict codes of Victorian floriography are not necessarily practiced anymore, the symbolic use of flowers persists in modern times. Red roses continue to symbolize love, white lilies are associated with purity and remembrance, and sunflowers clearly communicate joy and happiness in summer. Artists and designers often incorporate floral symbolism into their work, using blooms to convey complex themes and emotions.

Chamomile: A delightful small filler bloom that can symbolize patience and calm during adversity, resilience, and even rest or peace. Chamomile was often used to send a gentle message of encouragement. It’s the perfect bloom for someone navigating a stressful time or in need of a little peace.
